In the river Guadiana and tributaries there are 16 fish species, of which 10 are Iberian endemics and 4 occur only in the Guadiana river basin.
River fish figure prominently in the local recipes since ancient times. The fish fauna of the river is rich in delicacies that fill the tables of several local restaurants these days. The saboga (twait shad), muge (mullet), lamprey and eels are the basis of local specialties that take the flavor of the river to the table.
